At a Meeting of the Trustees of Tomson’s Trust
Held at No 23 Bayley Lane, Coventry, on the 18th day of May, 1915

Present
Mr John Bill
Mr C Vernon Pugh

A Scheme for a Swimming Competition prepared by Mr James Ward, copies of which had previously been sent to the Trustees, was considered, and it was resolved that it would be desirable to expend a portion of the funds in providing trophies and medals to be competed for annually.  The Scheme as presented was approved generally, subject to its being worked out in detail  Mr Ward, reference being made to the Trustees if necessary, and it was decided to start with the following Competitions:

  1. A Swimming Competition for men 220 yards free style for a Challenge Trophy to be competed for annually with gold, silver and bronze medals for the first, second and third competitors.
  2. A Swimming Competition for women 220 yards free style with a silver trophy to be competed for annually with gold, silver and bronze medals for first, second and third competitors.
  3. A Swimming Competition for boys under 16 years of age, 100 yards free style with gold, silver and bronze medals for first, second and third competitors.
  4. A Swimming Competition for girls under 16 years of age, 100 yards free style with gold, silver and bronze medals for first, second and third competitors.
  5. A Life Saving Competition for a team of four boys attending an Elementary School in Coventry with gold, silver and bronze medals for first, second and third teams.
  6. A Life Saving Competition for a team of four girls attending an Elementary School in Coventry with gold, silver and bronze medals for first, second and third teams.

The first two events to be open to natives of the City or persons having resided in the City for two years immediately prior to the date of the Competition.  The third and fourth Competitions to be open to sons and daughters whose parents (or one of them) shall be qualified as above.

It was suggested that the Head Master of the Corporation School of Art should be invited to hold a Competition for designs for the trophies and medals, Mr Ward undertaking to arrange details and to superintend the Competitions and obtain Judges from the Amateur Swimming Association, and in this connection the Trustees decided that they would pay an annual subscription to the said Association.
